Fillers vs. Botox: What's the Difference?

"Fillers or Botox?" is one of the most common questions we hear from patients in New Port Richey, and the honest answer is that they're not competitors — they're tools for different jobs. Understanding what each one actually does makes it much easier to choose the right treatment, or combination, for your face.

What Botox actually does

Botox® and other neuromodulators (Dysport®, Daxxify®, Xeomin®, Jeuveau®) temporarily relax the small muscles that cause expression lines — think frown lines between the brows, forehead creases, and crow's feet. These lines form from repeated muscle movement over years, so softening the muscle activity softens the line. Botox doesn't add volume; it changes how muscles move.

What dermal fillers actually do

Dermal fillers are gel-based products, usually made of hyaluronic acid, that add volume where it's been lost or never existed. They're used to restore fullness in cheeks, smooth deeper folds around the nose and mouth, define the jawline, or enhance lips. Unlike Botox, fillers don't affect muscle movement — they physically add structure and volume beneath the skin.

How to know which you need

• Lines that show up when you make an expression (frowning, squinting, raising your brows) — usually Botox territory.
• Hollowing, flattened cheeks, or thinning lips — usually a filler concern.
• Deep folds that are visible even at rest — often benefit from filler, sometimes combined with Botox nearby.
• Not sure? A trained eye at your consultation can usually tell within minutes.

Can you use both together?

Yes — and many patients do. It's common to soften expression lines with Botox while restoring volume with filler in the same visit, since the two treatments address different layers of aging. Your provider will build a plan based on your anatomy and goals rather than a one-size-fits-all package.
